SAB Member Dr. Al Matsumoto has been recognized with the Mayo Soley Award, a top honor from the Western Society for Clinical Investigation.
The award, presented at the Western Medical Research Conference (formerly the Western Regional Meeting) in Carmel, CA, is presented to a senior investigator in recognition of lifetime achievement in the area of scientific endeavor and training of junior investigators, and represents the highest honor presented by the combined research societies.

In addition to serving on the PCC Scientific Advisory Board since 2008, Dr. Matsumoto is a Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, Washington. He is Director of the Clinical Research Unit; Associate Director of the Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center; Acting Chief, Gerontology Section and an Attending Physician in Internal Medicine, Geriatric Medicine and Endocrinology & Metabolism. He also serves as Director, Seattle Institute for Biomedical and Clinical Research (SIBCR) at the Department of Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System in Seattle.
Dr. Matsumoto has written 166 peer-reviewed research papers, and more than 88 invited reviews and book chapters. His research has focused on physiological and clinical effects of testosterone in aging men, diagnosis and treatment of male hypogonadism, endocrine control of spermatogenesis and testis function, male contraceptive development, and the neuroendocrine regulation of reproductive function, energy balance, and body composition.
Dr. Matsumoto is active in numerous professional societies. Currently, he is Chair of the Laureate Awards Committee and member of the Task Force for Clinical Practice Guidelines on Testosterone Treatment of Men with Hypogonadism of The Endocrine Society and Co-Chair of the Partnership for the Accurate Testing of Hormones (PATH). He served as the Clinical Program Chair for the 2001 Endocrine Society Annual Meeting and 2007 American Society of Andrology Annual Meeting. He has been a member of the Population Research Subcommittee, NICHD Initial Review Group 1996-2000 and the Reproductive Endocrinology Study Section, NIH 1990-1994. Currently, he serves as an Editor for the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism and a Section Editor for Male Reproductive Endocrinology for UpToDate and has served on the Research Policy Advisory Committee of the United States Anti-Doping Agency.
